Adobe answers this one itself, and the answer is yes: Firefly is free to use.
What makes it worth an article is that Adobe attaches the word free to three different arrangements, and only one of them is a free tier.
What the free membership actually is
The product page keeps a question in its FAQ that is almost the search string verbatim. Adobe’s answer is that there is a free membership, it provides daily free generations for trying Firefly out, and anything beyond it requires buying a paid one.
Adobe’s announcement puts the claim in one line: Firefly is free to use, with paid plans that unlock the full power of creative AI. The overview page explains why the paid side exists, in a sentence about compute — generating content with AI models requires significant computational resources, which is why the plans were updated to include a monthly allocation of generative credits.
Free gets you in on a short daily rhythm; paying buys a monthly balance. The Adobe Firefly Image hub keeps the model line together.
How the free credits behave
Allocated on first use, not on the first of the month
This decides whether free means every day or once. Adobe answers it under the renewal question of its credits FAQ: for free plans, generative credits are allocated upon first use of a Firefly feature, such as using Text to Image, and those credits expire one month from allocation.
The page works its own example. Use the feature on the 15th and the credits expire on the 15th of the next month. In later months, credits are again allocated upon first use and expire one month from the new allocation date, so each set gets a full month.
The allowance runs on a cycle tied to your own activity, not to the calendar, and it does come back. Paid plans renew monthly on the billing date you started on.
Nothing rolls over
Adobe is blunt here: generative credits do not roll over to the next month, and the balance resets to your allocated amount monthly. Banking credits for a bigger push next month is not a thing on any tier.
Worked example: one prompt, counted in credits
The prompt Adobe publishes

Adobe teaches prompt writing with escalating lines on one subject, and the third is the finished shape of the idea.
Cat with bold stripes, digital painting, 2 colors, sitting by the window, shallow depth of field, cyberpunk fantasy.
Run that with Firefly Image 5 selected and the documented behaviour is specific: a single image comes back rather than the four variations Firefly Image 3 and Firefly Image 4 return, at native 4MP without upscaling. The panel mechanics are in the Firefly Image 5 guide.
The arithmetic
Adobe’s credits FAQ prices the premium image models. Firefly Image 5 sits at 10 credits per generation; Firefly Image 4 Ultra, the expensive one, is 20 credits per generation and one image per generation.
Firefly Image 4 and Firefly Image 3 are standard features instead, and those come with unlimited access on Firefly and credit plans rather than being metered.
Ten credits an image makes the tiers legible: one month of Firefly Standard covers 200 Firefly Image 5 generations, Firefly Pro 400, Firefly Pro Plus 1,000 and Firefly Premium 5,000. Those quotients are our division of two Adobe figures, not an Adobe table.
Free, unlimited and included are three different words
Mixing these up is the usual mistake here, so it is worth putting them side by side.
| Word Adobe uses | What it covers | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Daily free generations, on a monthly cycle anchored to first use | Product page FAQ |
| Unlimited | The first-year generations offer, individual plans only | Special offer page |
| Included | Standard features that never draw credits, during or after the offer | Special offer page |
Unlimited is a promotion rather than a property of a plan. Adobe lists it for individual plans for Firefly Pro, Firefly Pro Plus, Firefly Premium and the 4,000, 7,000, 10,000 and 50,000 credit tiers; Teams and Enterprise are excluded.
The year runs 12 consecutive months from the date you start, after which everyone returns to consuming credits. It works only on firefly.adobe.com and in the Firefly mobile app.
Included never expires. Every Firefly and credit plan carries unlimited generations of standard features: Firefly Image 4, Firefly Image 3, Generative Fill, Generative Erase, Generative Expand, Remove Background and Upscale. Adobe says those need no additional credits.
Where Firefly Image 5 sits in all this
Firefly Image 5 is absent from that permanent list, which is the practical meaning of premium. It draws credits, at 10 per generation.
During the first year it appears on the special offer’s image model list, so on an eligible plan it generates without consuming credits. Adobe warns the model list can change.
Once the year ends, Firefly Image 3 and Firefly Image 4 stay unlimited while Firefly Image 5 goes back to costing credits.
Video sits on a different ledger: the same FAQ prices video by the second, which belongs to the Firefly video story. Code is a third surface, with its own limits in the Firefly API guide.
What Adobe has not published
The size of the free allowance. Adobe describes the mechanics and never attaches a number, and the plan comparison page draws its table in the browser, so its figures were not readable while writing this.
No per-image price for Firefly Image 5 is published either, and no prompt success rate. Any free-credit number on a third-party site is that site’s own quote, not Adobe’s.
