Yes. Anthropic’s pricing page lists a Free tier at $0, described in three words: “Free for everyone.”
What that tier holds is the more useful question, because the answer is neither “a trial” nor “the full product, slower”. It is a specific set of features with a specific set of gates, and Anthropic documents both — just not in the same place.
The short answer, in Anthropic’s own words
Three sentences from official pages do most of the work.
“Free covers everyday questions. Pro gives you at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free.”
That is the plan-difference answer, and it is deliberately relative. There is no absolute number attached, because — as the same page puts it — “there’s no fixed message count”.
“While using the free Claude plan, there is a session-based usage limit that will reset every five hours.”
So the limit is a window, not a monthly allowance. Five hours after you start hitting it, capacity comes back.
What the free plan includes
The Free card lists the surfaces and the capabilities together: chat on web, iOS, Android and desktop; generating code and visualising data; writing, editing and creating content; the ability to search the web; memory across conversations; creating files; connectors with remote MCP; and extended thinking for complex work.
Read that list again, because the last two entries are the ones people assume are paid-only. Connectors and extended thinking are on the free tier.
What the free plan leaves out
The pricing page publishes a comparison table under “Models and usage”, and there the free tier’s real shape appears. Fable: “No”. Opus: also “No”. Sonnet and Haiku: yes.
Models you cannot reach at $0
Anthropic’s current published line-up is Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5. The free tier reaches the two smaller ones and gates the two larger ones, which is visible only in the table rather than in any sentence on the page.
Two more rows decide things. Usage credits are listed as “No” on Free, and on paid plans they are how you keep working after a limit. Priority access at high traffic times is “No” on Free and also “No” on Pro, appearing only on Max. Context window is 200k on Free, the same as Pro and Max.
Claude Code is absent for a simpler reason. The pricing FAQ says it “is included in all paid plans”, a statement about paid plans only.
How the limits actually work
Two mechanisms stack, and the second is easy to miss. Every plan resets on “a rolling five-hour session window”, and paid plans “add weekly limits on top”. Your activity across web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code “all draws from the same pool”, so a long coding session spends the same budget as a phone chat.
What consumes that budget is documented too: the length and complexity of your conversations, the features you use, which model you are chatting with, and the effort level you have selected.
When you hit the wall, the pricing FAQ names three exits: wait for the reset, move to a higher plan, or — on paid plans — turn on usage credits to keep working at API rates. You can see where you stand under Settings, then Usage.
Worked example: three workloads, three verdicts
These cases are reasoning exercises, not measured counts. No official number exists for messages per window, so nobody can honestly tell you how many you get.
Case one: occasional research and writing. A handful of questions most days, some long documents pasted in, no model switching. Reason it through with the published relative figures — Free covers everyday questions, and Pro is at least five times the per-session usage. If your heaviest day is a dozen exchanges, the free window is unlikely to be your constraint. Stay on Free.
Case two: a working day spent in the app. You are in Claude through the morning and again after lunch, with long threads and file uploads, and you see the notice that you have hit a limit. That notice is the signal, not a schedule. Move to Pro when the interruption starts costing more than the subscription.
Case three: agentic coding. Two published facts settle it. Claude Code is included in paid plans, and every surface shares one pool. On Free the feature is not in the list at all, so this is not a usage decision. Either pick a paid plan or use the API directly, which the API getting-started guide covers.
Before you decide, gather three facts:
1. Does anything you need appear as No on Free in the "Models and usage" table?
2. Have you actually seen the limit notice, or are you guessing you would?
3. Do you need Claude Code, which the FAQ lists as paid-plan only?Two of those three can be read off official pages in minutes.
Two conditions to check before you count on it
Anthropic’s help centre states two requirements that have nothing to do with quota: you “must be in one of our supported locations to access Claude”, and you must be at least 18 years old to use the services.
For a reader outside the supported set, the free-tier question is moot until that changes.
Where the answer is not published
Anthropic publishes no fixed message count, no weekly limit figure, and no statement naming the free tier’s default model. Third-party pages fill all three gaps anyway. Treat a precise count as usable only if its source traces back to an official page.
One related point is published and worth knowing before you hunt for a deal: the Pro help page states that Anthropic does “not offer standard discounted pricing” on paid plans, and that support “cannot issue one-off discounts or coupons”. A coupon offer that claims otherwise is not from Anthropic.
Why the message counts you have read do not exist
Search and you will find figures like roughly 45 messages per five hours on Pro, plus a scaled number for Max. Those circulate widely and trace back to no official page; the official position is the opposite, stated as “there’s no fixed message count”.
The reason is mechanical, and it explains the design. Your consumption depends on conversation length, features, model and effort level — four variables, none fixed. A fixed message count would be wrong on the first long thread. Anthropic chose a shared budget instead of a promise, which is why “how many messages” has no fixed answer.
The relative figures are the usable part: at least 5x per session from Free to Pro, and 5x or 20x from Pro to Max.
